All Boeing 747 Aircraft are fitted with a Smoke Shutter. Its primary purpose has evolved from its use with the Sextant to its current use for evacuation of smoke in the event of an electrical fire in the cockpit. The Smoke Shutter seals flush with the aircraft skin, attached to the inside in the overhead behind the pilot. It is connected to a push/pull cable assembly and is routed to a knob located between the pilot and copilot in the overhead. In the event of a fire, the knob is pulled, drawing the shutter aside and allowing contaminated air to escape into the atmosphere. A drain plug is provided at the low point in the shutter retraction well to drain any water which may be collected. Exploded View  Parts List
